Totally Funtastic Playables

Paste

Materials:

1/2 cup water

1 cup flour

What to do:

Mix the flour and water together in a bowl , you can use a spoon or get a little messy and use your hands.

Paste

Materials:

1 cup of sugar

1 cup of flour

1 teaspoon alum (a preservative)

4 cups boiling water

a few drops of oil of cloves to give the paste an awesome smell (or a horrible one)

What to do:

Mix the sugar, flour and alum together and slowly add the water. (in a pan over medium heat)

Keep cooking over medium heat and stirring until the stuff thickens.

Put in the oil of cloves and let it cool down.

You should keep it in a covered jar

Wheat Paste

Materials:

1 1/2 cups of boiling water

2 teaspoons of wheat flour

1/2 teaspoon salt

What to do:

Just mix it all up and put it in a covered jar.

Finger Paint

Materials:

paste or liquid starch

1 or 2 spoonfuls of soap flakes (or powdered detergent)

a few drops of food coloring or powdered paint

What to do:

Mix the paste, soap flakes and food coloring all together in a bowl.

Whip with an egg beater until it is nice and fluffy

Fill up several small containers or muffin tin with the paste or liquid laundry starch.

Then mix in a few drops of the food coloring or powdered tempera paint into each one (for texture, you can stir in some salt, sand, or coffee grounds)

Place some shiny paper (can use shelf paper) on your table.

Use a wet sponge and dampen the paper or hold the paper under the faucet for a few minutes.

Put down a dab of paint on top of the paper and start your fingers painting.

Tip: Don't use too much paint or your paper will get muddy and you don't have to just use your fingers, try your palm or your whole hand. If your paper gets too wrinkled you can put it between newspapers and iron it..after it dries.

Play Dough

Materials:

1 cup of flour

1/2 cup of salt

1 cup of water

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

2 tablespoons cream of tartar

food coloring optional

What to do:

Mix the flour, salt and oil in a pan and slowly add the water.(u can add a couple drops of food coloring too)

Cook over medium heat until it gets stiff and doughy.

Put on wax paper and let it cool off.

Knead it, smack and roll it...until it feels good.

Clay

Materials:

6 cups of baking soda

3 cups of cornstarch

3 1/2 cups of water

1/2 cup of salt

What to do:

Mix all into a saucepan.

Cook over medium heat until it bubbles and thickens.

Put it on a board and cover with a damp cloth until it cools.

Knead and divide into batches (add food coloring if you want)

Put in a ziploc bag or tightly sealed container for storage. (put in refrigerator when not in use, also put a hole in small balls of clay and fill with water before storage)

Tip: Clay hardens slowly without baking and can be painted with tempera or acrylic paint for a permanent finish.

Totally Terrific Tasty Edibles

Applesauce

Materials:

4 apples

1/3 cup of sugar

1 tablespoon of cinnamon

strainer

1/2 cup of water

What to do:

Wash, peel, cut and core the apples.Put them in a pan with the water.

Cook over low heat about 15 minutes, stir occasionally until they are mushy.

Drain them in the strainer. Put them back in the pan and add sugar and cinnamon. Simmer for about 4 more minutes, stirring gently.

You can either eat as is or puree in a food processor or blender.

Taffy

Materials:

4 cups sugar

1 teaspoon cream of tartar

1 1/2 cups water

Candy flavoring and coloring to taste

What to do:

Mix sugar and cream of tartar.

Heat the water until it boils, then pour the sugar and tartar stirring until dissolved.

Let boil until threads form from a hot spoon.

When firm, pour out into a chilled, buttered slab or platter.

Use a spatula, turn the edges to the center until cool.

Break into pieces and start pulling.
